Thank you for finding this site, please do get in touch and tell me more about what you find of value here. As for me, My name is Peter Marks and I live in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. I’m just a person sheltering at home like the rest of us during the COVID-19 pandemic. My youngest kid is off at college and my wife is busy being a brilliant musician. So, in between looking for jobs, I’ve got more time than usual to spend on something interesting or creative.
For me, that’s squash. It’s beautiful, diverse, full of culture and history, and delicious. It gives me joy in my garden and on my plate. I wanted to learn more about it and share it with the world. And since I’m unemployed for at least a couple months, I’ll see if I can learn about ads and affiliate links and that sort of thing. Bear with me!
My career is in nonprofit management, so I want to let you know about the great nonprofit organizations that have hosted me and helped me get to know squash growers around here and all over the world:
- Mountain BizWorks, where I worked with farmers and food enterpreneurs to write business plans and access loans;
- Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, where I worked with farmers, farmers markets, buyers, and the general public to grow a thriving local food economy;
- Seed Programs International, where I worked to move excess vegetable seed to hunger response and social/economic development projects around the world.
I now have no active relationship with these nonprofits, but they are all great organizations very much worth supporting. If you appreciate this site, drop one a donation!
